Just outside Vilshofen

The last two nights we have camped in below freezing temps. There is something  about the quality of sleep in the cold, an earnestness, I think. I feel pretty stiff this morning. My hand washed undies and socks are also stiff and frozen, draped on my bike.
Yesterday the towns were abuzz getting ready for the Easter weekend. Everything will be closed basically through Monday. We remembered this from Spain and stocked up on food, but who knows what this means for lodging the next few days.
Ruins around every other bend in the river
The first and only tenters again! We got this prime bit of real estate across from Vilshofen for just 5 euros! I could feel barges rumbling upstream in my body during the night. 2 churches across the river rang the quarter hours all night, but considerately refrained from the tops of the hour from 10 pm until 6 am.
If you look above the railing, you should be able to see our lone little tent.
Yesterday was a little trying at times because the cycle way was completely blocked with construction without any warning. We had to backtrack several times. A man on an old moped zoomed up to us and tried to explain in German where the trail was blocked. When it became clear we could not understand very well, he instead told us he was on his way to go fishing. He said he has caught fish over a meter long and 6 and 20 kilos in weight in the Danube. Maybe some sort of pike?
We walked over the bridge and found the best crusty whole wheat bread we've had so far - a perfect accompaniment to our potato and leek soup.
A great little cooking spot right next to the river. I keep buying mystery soup mixes and just adding garlic, meat, and veges. Soup mixes are quite high quality here.
Nearly silent little planes flew overhead all evening, landing on a little strip just past the bridge. How are all motorized things so quiet here? German engineering I guess.
Headed into Passau today. Hopefully we will find some internet.
