Not a lens distortion - the ice crystals in the air captured the light and refracted it. There were other repetitions of the same patterns in the sky outside the frame. Scott says that there appeared to be two suns in the sky at times.
Scott and his crew flew home after midnight and didn't arrive in McMurdo until early the next morning. They got to see the molting emperor penguins on the way back in. When Scott arrived back in town, the driver radioed ahead and I ran down the road from shuttles to meet them. Lots of people witnessed our corny but wonderful reunion, and shuttle Joe happened to be in Ivan right in front of us as we were hugging and he kept beeping the horn. It is so wonderful to have Scott back. He lost a lot of weight again, but he didn't have that far away, crazy look in his eyes like he did last time.
That's it for AGAP - it was only a 2-year camp.
All that remains there. A traverse will pick up the remaining cargo.

The lonely place Scott spent the last couple of months. To give perspective, this is the 3-mile long skiway that will probably remain there for many years to come because AGAP is in what is considered a desert environment with very minimal precipitation.

Those pictures are very cool, but that last one makes me feel a little crazy just looking at it. So glad Scott is back, now you guys just have to come allll the way back and give me a big sandwich hug. Love you!
