Video of Driving on the Ice

This video was taken a few days ago by Shuttle Bill (everyone in my department has the first name "Shuttle" down here and that's how we are known - I am Shuttle Jen ) of the difficulties driving through the transition from Ross Island down onto the sea ice. His passenger, Walter the Plumber, is clearly from Downeast Maine. We travel through this section of the road at least six times a day. Whew, exhausting. It should be starting to get colder again very soon and these puddles will freeze over. Sometimes you go down into the deep puddles and you can't climb back out again. Nerve-wracking!

Oh, and guess who is in McMurdo today? The prince of Monaco (son of Grace Kelly). I had to spray-wash one of our vans and totally clean it out for his use. We all grumble when DV's (distinguished visitors) are here because meals close early and there are extra chores. Last week we had the former president of Slovakia (I drove him to the airfield in Ivan), and he was nice enough. Funny, he didn't get nearly as much attention as Prince Albert.
