Super quick posting tonight. Three weeks of walking with only 1 day off is taking its toll. I am weary.
Passed through very pleasant city of Leon and spent a lot of time in the cathedral and cloister. 125 stained glass windows!
Had some regional specialties today (see pics). Cecina de Leon is dried smoked cow sliced paper thin. Like most Spanish cured meats it has a strong earthy, gamey flavor that sometimes is a bit strong for my taste. It reminded me too much of that buffalo we ate in Nepal which got struck by lightning and was hung in strips over the fire for weeks. Also we ate croquettes which got me thinking about those caterpillars pupating from a few days ago. They are deep fried but inside is gooey and a little fishy tasting even though they were made with jamon. We both felt a little blicky after so much rich food and ended up making ourselves big salads for dinner in a spacious clean albergue.
Friends of ours stayed at the Leon Parador, a favorite of Hemingway's, for 500 euros! Our bunk beds, along with kitchen use, leather couches in a big communal space, and super hot showers cost 6 euros each. Lots of walking through urban and industrial sprawl but the good thing is we had plenty of shops to buy veges from. The long, flat green beans are one of my favorites (judios verde).
Somehow this albergue has all German folks tonight except us. I find listening to other languages quite soothing actually. Off to bed early tonight...
