Kaikoura Pics

We are staying at an extremely remote cottage on a cattle and sheep station covering miles and miles of Idaho-border-ish looking hills. We awake to the sounds of many foreign-sounding birds. The lady of the house left us a basket of farm eggs, and a huge basket of plums, apples, and peaches from her orchard.

I've been spending a lot of time trying to learn Nepali here. Just learning the devangaari script is extremely challenging, but I really enjoy the way it is like a puzzle. The sounds are even different the western languages - you have to put your tongue on the roof of your mouth and puff out some air while you say some of the sounds.

 Cow and Jen facing off...
We plan to hike than mountain (Fyffe) tomorrow. Eeks, 8 hours or more to do it.

On a hike, we came upon this old farmhand bunkhouse. Everything seems to be stuck in the 30's or 40's back here in the hills. The electric system in the house we are staying in has old ceramic breakers that click like a grandfather clock at night. The local school has 3 students in it. We are 50 minutes from a grocery store, but only 15 minutes from the ocean.

When we get to Motueka, we should have more time to blog and email. This internet cafe is HOT, stuffy, and they are playing Buffalo Soldier at full volume.
