A penguin came over to see us off at Pegasus.
There were two planes within a few hours taking people off the ice. First the C-17 (no windows or creature comforts)....
Then the Australian airbus with first class seats, flight attendants, and an open cockpit where the pilots welcomed us to come up and visit!
Because I work in the ATO department, we were given first class seats. Glorious!
Chillin with our bunny boots (actually, everyone stripped off our ECW gear shortly after take off - but the flight attendants kept their snow pants and boots on for several hours. Then they changed into high heels and skirts shortly before landing. )
Seeing Antarctica from above was such a treat! It is immense.
Wonder if any human being has walked among these peaks...
Click any of these pics to enlarge. Scott took them out the window of the plane. It was a great voyage off the ice. We all acted like a bunch of kooks when we arrived in Christchurch, sniffing the air, marveling at the humidity on our brows and skin, staring disbelieving at two blond kids chasing each other at the luggage carousel like we did with frolicking penguins only a few hours before, sticking our faces into flowering bushes and blinking our pale raccoon eyes at the strange darkness outside.
A close up of the little guy at Pegasus field. He approached Scott and had a conversation with him. Love their eyes - so inquisitive and fearless.
